Tom Rollman, a 1985 graduate of Chugiak High School, stands among the most accomplished multi-sport athletes in Alaska high school history. A First Team All-State basketball player, State Champion high jumper, and National High School All-American Honorable Mention, Rollman helped elevate Chugiak athletics to statewide prominence in the early 1980s.

In basketball, Rollman was a three-year starter and letter winner, earning Honorable Mention All-Region and All-State honors as a junior before being named First Team All- Region and First Team All-State as a senior. He led Chugiak as its top rebounder and second- leading scorer in his final two seasons and was selected to compete in two Alaska High School All-Star Games, winning the halftime dunk contest at both events. His excellence earned him National High School Athletic Coaches Association Honorable Mention All- American recognition in 1985.

A former opposing coach recalled the challenge of preparing for Rollman: “As head basketball coach I had to find a game strategy to deal with Tom Rollman. I was forced many times to play what I called a ‘box and one’ defense.” He described Rollman as “the type of player that never gave up on himself or his team,” praising his composure and ability to remain in control in all situations.

Rollman’s athletic versatility extended beyond the hardwood. In track and field, he went undefeated in the high jump as a senior, clearing 6’6” and capturing both the Region IV and Alaska State Championships. In cross country, he posted a personal-best 16:22 in the 5K and qualified for the state meet despite suffering a foot injury during the regional race.

One longtime coach reflected that athletes like Rollman sent a message across the state: “LOOK OUT THE CHUGIAK MUSTANGS ARE ON THE MOVE!” His leadership and competitive drive helped transform Chugiak into a formidable program across multiple sports.

Rollman graduated with a 3.8 GPA and earned a full basketball scholarship to the University of Alaska Anchorage. After additional collegiate competition and completing his degree, he returned home to serve the Anchorage School District as a teacher, coach, and counselor, dedicating decades to mentoring young people before retiring in 2021.

“Tom is an exceptional and unique individual,” one coach wrote. “He is an outstanding role model in every aspect of his life… He is one of the finest young men that I have ever met.”

A champion in competition and a leader in the classroom and community, Tom Rollman’s legacy reflects excellence, perseverance, and integrity. His achievements across basketball, track and field, and cross country — along with his lifelong commitment to education and mentorship — make him a deserving member of the Alaska High School Hall of Fame.
