Rose Marie Fraker, a 2009 graduate of Yakutat High School, stands among the most accomplished basketball players in Alaska 2A history. A four-year varsity standout, two-time Alaska 2A Player of the Year, and three-time state champion, Fraker helped elevate Yakutat girls basketball to unprecedented heights.
From the moment she stepped onto the high school court, Fraker transformed the Yakutat program. Over her four-year career, Yakutat went undefeated in Region V 2A conference play and captured four consecutive regional championships. After finishing sixth at the state tournament her freshman season, Fraker led the Eagles on a remarkable run of three straight Alaska 2A State Championships from 2007 to 2009 — a rare and historic accomplishment in Alaska high school basketball.
Individually, Fraker’s résumé is equally impressive. She was a four-time Region V 2A All- Conference selection and a three-time State All-Tournament Team honoree. She was named Alaska 2A Girls Player of the Year in both her junior and senior seasons, solidifying her place among the elite players of her era.
Her leadership was evident on the biggest stage. In Yakutat’s 2009 championship victory, Fraker scored 17 points and sealed the game from the free-throw line in the final seconds. Yet even in that defining moment, her focus remained on her teammates. “I thought about my team,” she said, “because without them, I wouldn’t be here.”
Those who coached and competed against her consistently recognized her impact. One longtime Southeast coach wrote that Rose was undeniably the best player on a talented team and praised her intensity, skill, and basketball IQ. Another supporter noted that she led by awareness, poise, and confidence—qualities that inspired trust and elevated the team as a whole.
Beyond her accomplishments as a player, Fraker’s legacy is deeply rooted in her community. Following graduation, she chose to remain in Yakutat, dedicating herself to coaching youth and high school basketball and organizing tournaments that keep the sport thriving in her village. For more than a decade, she has worked tirelessly to sustain opportunities for young athletes, ensuring that basketball remains a source of pride, purpose, and unity.
In April 2025, Fraker was honored with the Walter Soboleff Achievement Award at the Gold Medal Basketball Tournament, recognizing her sportsmanship, leadership, spirit, and dedication to her team, village, and community.
A champion on the court and a mentor beyond it, Rose Marie Fraker embodies the very best of Alaska high school athletics. Her championships, leadership, and lifelong commitment to Yakutat basketball make her a deserving member of the Alaska High School Hall of Fame.
