Joe Balash, a 1993 graduate of Ben Eielson High School, stands among Alaska’s most accomplished small-school wrestlers. A three-time individual state champion and four-year varsity letter winner, Balash helped lead one of the most dominant wrestling programs in state history while exemplifying leadership and character.

Balash’s high school career was marked by sustained excellence. Competing for the Ravens, he captured three consecutive ASAA State Wrestling Championships and finished third at state as a senior, while also winning four Region VI titles. During his four years at Ben Eielson, the Ravens secured four team state championships, cementing an era of dominance in Alaska small-school wrestling.

As a freshman, Balash picked up where his predecessor left off, winning the 112-pound state title and contributing to the Ravens’ championship run. Over the course of his career, he earned recognition as a Wrestling USA High School All-American. He served as team captain for three years, and his leadership was instrumental in guiding Eielson to three consecutive team state championships and a runner-up finish.

His longtime coach wrote that during Balash’s wrestling career, he consistently displayed the greatest qualities in character and leadership, always willing to help teammates who needed it both on the mat and in the classroom. He was described not only as anoutstanding individual competitor but as a true leader, helping his teammates give morethan they thought they were capable.

Balash continued his wrestling career at Duquesne University and later Pacific Universitybefore injuries brought his collegiate competition to a close. Though his time on the matended, his commitment to excellence did not. The discipline, goal-setting, and work ethic forged through athletics became the foundation for his professional achievements.

Following college, Balash built a distinguished career in public service and leadership. Heserved as Alaska’s Commissioner of the Department of Natural Resources and later asAssistant Secretary for Land and Minerals Management for the U.S. Department of theInterior, overseeing federal agencies responsible for land, energy, and mineral resources. He also served as chief of staff for U.S. Senator Dan Sullivan and currently works as SeniorVice President for External Affairs for Santos/Oil Search in Alaska.
