Fred Angerman Jr. represents the gold standard of Alaska high school basketball — as a player, an official, and a lifelong ambassador for the game in Wrangell and across Southeast Alaska. His legacy spans five decades and touches nearly every level of the sport.

A four-year varsity starter for Wrangell High School from 1972–1975, Angerman led the Wolves to the 1975 Southeast Alaska Championship, earning All-Tournament honors at both the regional and state levels. In an era without enrollment classifications, small schools like Wrangell competed against the largest programs in the state, and Angerman thrived in that environment.

During the 1975 championship season, he poured in 33 points and grabbed 17 rebounds in the Southeast title game to secure the championship for Wrangell. Teammates and opponents alike remember him as a relentless competitor who played much bigger than his size and whose stat lines were always full.

Known statewide as “Fast Freddy,” Angerman was fearless and confident, shooting from anywhere on the floor. His toughness, strength, and competitive drive made him one of Southeast Alaska’s most respected players of his era.

After his playing days, including time at Skagit Valley College, Angerman transitioned into officiating in the early 1990s. For nearly three decades (1991–2021), he officiated countless Region V championship games and numerous state tournaments across classifications from 1A to 4A.

Coaches consistently praised his fairness and composure. Many noted that when Fred was on the floor with a whistle, the game would be officiated the right way — with control, integrity, and respect for players and coaches alike.

Beyond varsity basketball, Angerman devoted more than 40 years to the Wrangell Elks Hoop Shoot and coached youth basketball for decades. He volunteered countless hours officiating youth league and middle school games, shaping generations of young players in his community.

From playground legend to Southeast champion, from state tournament standout to trusted official, Fred Angerman Jr. embodied competitive excellence, integrity, and community commitment. His impact on Wrangell and Alaska high school basketball will endure for generations.

He is a deserving inductee into the Alaska High School Hall of Fame.
