Stan Harris has left an indelible mark on the Alaska music community through his exceptional work as a teacher, mentor, and leader in music education. Over his distinguished career, Stan inspired generations of students at Palmer High School, fostering a deep love for music and the arts, while developing their skills in both band and choir at the highest levels.

Throughout his career, Stan Harris was known for his unmatched dedication to his students, guiding them not only in musical performance but also in life. His music programs, including jazz bands, choirs, and musical theater productions, consistently earned top honors, with students achieving high ratings and command performances at the regional and state levels. “Stan’s ability to teach both band and choir at the highest levels is unmatched,” said Sara Guhl, former music teacher at Wasilla High School. “His kindness, flexibility, and guidance for students is unparalleled.”

Under Stan’s leadership, Palmer High School’s music programs flourished, with students receiving top scores at national competitions and earning recognition for their achievements. His students were frequently given the opportunity to perform and compete across the country, with memorable performance trips to New York City, Washington, D.C., and other cities, where they not only gained exposure to world-class performances but also explored the world beyond their hometown.

Seth Blohm, a former student of Stan’s, reflects on the impact Stan had on his life: “Working with Mr. Harris, I found joy and passion in performing music again. He always found ways for us to play with the music and experiment in fun ways, which helped develop our jazz skills and deepened our love for music.”

Stan’s influence extended far beyond the classroom. His leadership and sense of humor made him a beloved figure in the community, whether he was teaching in the classroom, playing in community productions, or mentoring future music educators. “He is one of the humblest people I know,” said Sara Guhl. “Stan never brags about his accomplishments but always lifts others up. His ability to build relationships with students, staff, and parents is something truly special.”

Stan’s dedication to his students was further exemplified in his work with solo and ensemble festivals, where his jazz soloists and ensemble groups consistently earned high ratings. His leadership in both the classroom and community produced lasting friendships and invaluable lessons, making him not only a teacher but a mentor for many aspiring musicians.

In recognition of his extraordinary contributions to music education and his dedication to his students, Stan Harris’s induction into the Alaska High School Hall of Fame is a well-deserved honor that celebrates his legacy as one of Alaska’s finest educators and community leaders.
