Nathan Schwartzbauer’s high school athletic career was nothing short of exceptional, earning him a place among the most versatile and accomplished athletes in Alaska’s history. A four-sport standout at Colony High School, Nathan’s accomplishments spanned football, hockey, track & field, and basketball, and his leadership and dedication left a lasting impact on the school’s athletic programs.
Nathan’s achievements in football were remarkable. As a junior and senior, he earned All-Conference and All-State honors as a defensive end, showcasing his exceptional skills on the defensive line. In his senior year, Nathan expanded his role to tight end, earning additional All-Conference and All-State selections, underscoring his athletic versatility and commitment to his team.
In track & field, Nathan reached the pinnacle of success, helping lead Colony High to back-to-back-to-back regional championships in 1998, 1999 and 2000. His dominance in the high jump, where he earned state and regional titles in both his junior and senior years, was a key factor in the team’s success. Nathan’s speed and athleticism contributed significantly to victories in the 4x100m, 4x200m, and 4x400m relays, cementing his place as a vital member of Colony’s championship teams. His contributions helped set multiple school and Region III records, and his legacy in track remains strong.
Nathan was also a standout player on the hockey rink, where he played for Colony’s regional-winning teams in 1999 and 2000. A dynamic defenseman, Nathan earned All-State and All-Conference honors and was named to the All-State Tournament Team in both 1999 and 2000. His leadership on the ice was recognized by his coaches and peers, with Nathan serving as team captain in 2000. His hockey prowess continued after high school, as he went on to play for the Sioux City Musketeers, winning a USHL Junior National Championship in 2002. Nathan’s success continued at Bemidji State University, where he helped the team secure two conference championships and appeared in NCAA tournaments in 2005 and 2006.
In addition to his athletic prowess, Nathan excelled in the classroom, maintaining academic excellence throughout his high school and college years. At Bemidji State University, Nathan was a three-time Academic All-American and earned spots on the Dean’s List. He graduated with degrees in Sports Management and Business.
“Nathan is one of the best athletes I’ve ever had the honor to coach,” said his hockey coach Eric Troisi. “His athletic ability, combined with his work ethic, helped make Colony High School one of the best hockey teams in the state.”
“Nathan was a great Tight End and Defensive End. His speed and great hands made him a threat for both first downs and downfield,” said Mike Boyd, his coach at Colony High School. “He was one of the quickest Defensive Ends off the corner that I have ever coached. He was coachable and fun to have around.”
Nathan Schwartzbauer’s impact on Alaska high school sports is undeniable. His accomplishments across four sports, his leadership, and his academic excellence make him a deserving inductee into the Alaska High School Hall of Fame. Today, Nathan continues to excel in his professional life as Director of Operations at Greenpoint Metals in Cincinnati, where he balances his career with his role as a dedicated father.
Nathan’s legacy as an athlete, leader, and role model continues to inspire future generations of Alaskan athletes.
