Dick Thompson

Dick Thompson – one of the most influential prep ice hockey coaches retired in 1998 from Service High School – Dick Thompson began his coaching career in Minnesota. Alaska pulled him north in 1970 where he coached for one season at Dimond High School in Anchorage, before beginning his legendary coaching career at Robert Service High School. With over 300 total victories, he amassed an enviable record of 287-72-7 as head hockey coach of Service’s team, which finished 1st or 2nd in the league from 1971 to 1986. Thompson’s contribution went beyond his high school coaching duties. He served two terms on the National Federation (NFHS) Ice Hockey Rules Committee, served as the league director of Cook Inlet Hockey, member of the USA Hockey Rules Committee, coached the Alaska Drillers high school all-star team and the Arctic Winter Games midget team to a gold medal in 1980. Thompson still calls Anchorage home.
