Robert “Rob” Walkotte stands as one of the most dedicated and accomplished multi-sport officials in Alaska high school history. For more than four decades, Walkotte has upheld the integrity of interscholastic athletics across football, softball, basketball, and volleyball while mentoring generations of officials and student-athletes.

Walkotte’s officiating career began in 1979 and spans 47 years in football, including experience in Georgia and North Dakota, where he served as one of four Crew Chiefs (Referees) in the Minot area. In Alaska alone, he officiated 644 varsity football games and 84 state playoff games, including 14 state championships — eight as the Referee (White Hat).

His contributions extend well beyond football. Over 30 years in softball (1989–2019), he officiated 490 varsity games and 57 state playoff contests, including five state championships. In basketball, he compiled 809 varsity games and 84 collegiate games, totaling more than 2,800 contests across 23 years, including 17 state playoff games and a state championship.

In total, Walkotte has officiated nearly 7,000 games, including 158 state playoff games and 20 championship contests across sports. Equally significant has been his leadership as an assignor. Since 1998, Walkotte has served as assignor for football officials; he also assigned volleyball officials beginning in 2012, softball umpires from 1998–2017, and basketball officials from 1998–2023.

Colleagues consistently describe him as a mentor and leader who emphasizes fairness, accountability, and integrity. He teaches officials to call every game as if it were being recorded, to never make up a call, and to own mistakes when they happen. His commitment to professionalism has strengthened officiating standards across Alaska.

Walkotte’s dedication has taken him throughout Alaska, including remote communities accessible only by plane or boat. His presence on the field or court reflects humility, preparation, and a deep respect for the game and its participants.

More than just an official, Rob Walkotte has been a teacher of rules, a builder of officiating systems, and a mentor who shaped the next generation of officials. His commitment to fairness and the integrity of sport reflects the highest standards of Alaska high school athletics.

Robert Walkotte is a deserving inductee into the Alaska High School Hall of Fame.
