Jamie Smith, a 1984 graduate of Wasilla High School, stands as one of the most accomplished and respected hockey coaches in Alaska high school history. A multi-sport athlete turned transformational coach, Smith has spent more than 35 years building championship programs while shaping generations of young athletes across the Mat-Su Valley.

As a student-athlete at Wasilla High School, Smith lettered ten times in football, hockey, baseball, and track & field before continuing his hockey career at Northern Arizona University and later at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. His competitive foundation would later shape a coaching philosophy built on discipline, accountability, and relentless work ethic.

Smith began his coaching career at Wasilla High School before moving to Houston High School, where from 1992–2005 he guided the Hawks to five state championships and revitalized the school’s athletic programs. Later, at Colony High School (2009–2019), he led the Knights to four region championships and three third-place finishes at the state tournament, compiling an impressive 389-169-12 record.

Former Athletic Director Mike Boyd wrote, “There is little doubt that the reason he got so much out of his players, students and coaches is because he leads by example. He has given countless hours of his free time, works hard, is stern but fair, and is very knowledgeable in what he was teaching and coaching.”

Mike Vrvilo, former principal and executive director, noted that Smith’s career reflects “unmatched dedication to students, outstanding leadership, and a relentless pursuit of excellence,” emphasizing that his influence extends far beyond wins and losses.

Norman Bouchard echoed that sentiment, writing, “In my thirty-plus years of teaching, coaching and as an Administrator, I have rarely seen anyone who has been more dedicated to the athletes and sport.” He described Smith as a positive leader whose influence across schools and leagues helped build programs and strengthen communities throughout Alaska.

Perhaps most telling is the perspective of his former players. One wrote, “From that moment on, Jamie became much more than just a coach — he became a mentor, a teacher, a trusted advisor, and a lifelong father figure.”

After retiring from teaching following a distinguished 30-year career, Smith continues to coach and mentor. He resides in the Mat-Su Valley with his wife Nancy, their children Cooper and Sydney, and their grandchildren Bo and Ivey.

Jamie Smith’s legacy is defined by championships, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to youth development. His decades of leadership in high school hockey have left a lasting mark on Alaska athletics. He is a deserving member of the Alaska High School Hall of Fame.
