Thomas Dyment, a 2018 graduate of Bethel Regional High School, stands among the most accomplished wrestlers in Alaska high school history. Bethel’s first four-time state wrestling champion, Dyment combined elite competitive success with humility, leadership, and a deep commitment to service.

In wrestling, Dyment made history by capturing four Alaska School Activities Association State Championships at 98, 106, and 113 pounds, becoming the first four-time state champion in Bethel Regional High School history. A four-year varsity letter winner, he was voted Outstanding Wrestler at the 2017 ASAA State Tournament and earned national recognition as a Wrestling USA Senior All-American Honorable Mention, ranked as high as 13th in the country.

Those who coached him consistently recognized both his talent and character. One longtime coach wrote, “Thomas always has been and still is an extremely respectful, hardworking, and dedicated young man,” adding that his dedication led him to becoming “Bethel’s first four-time state wrestling champion.”

Dyment’s excellence extended beyond the state level. Representing Team Alaska, he achieved All-American status nationally and earned selection to the Alaska National Dual Team in back-to-back years — a distinction reserved for wrestlers who demonstrate elite performance, consistency, and character. A mentor noted that his “unmatched work ethic, discipline, and commitment to representing Alaska set the standard” at national team camps.

In addition to wrestling, Dyment was a varsity cross country state qualifier and competed at the state level in Native Youth Olympics, placing third in the Wrist Carry.

While many athletes pursue collegiate competition, Dyment chose a different path — one centered on service. Following graduation, he became a firefighter and EMT in Bethel before advancing to professional service with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE), specializing in wildland fire response and rescue operations.

Even after stepping away from competition, Dyment remains closely connected to the athletic community. He regularly attends events to support and mentor young athletes. As one supporter wrote, he can often be found “giving advice to athletes, encouraging them to their best,” reflecting a desire to uplift those around him.

“Thomas Dyment is more than a worthy candidate,” one coach concluded. “He is the model we should all aspire to be in the lives of those around us.”

A champion on the mat and a servant-leader beyond it, Thomas Dyment’s legacy is defined by excellence, humility, and service. His historic achievements and continued commitment to community make him a deserving member of the Alaska High School Hall of Fame.
