Colton Lauwers, a 2009 graduate of Dimond High School, stands among Alaska’s most accomplished two-sport athletes. A four-year varsity standout in both basketball and baseball, Lauwers combined championship-level performance with leadership and competitive excellence throughout his high school career.
In basketball, Lauwers was a four-year varsity letter winner and three-year team captain, leading Dimond to four consecutive state tournament appearances, never finishing lower than fourth place. His senior season capped one of the most impressive careers in state history as he led Dimond to the Alaska 4A State Championship and was named Alaska’s 2009 State Player of the Year. A three-time All-CIC selection and two-time All-State honoree, Lauwers consistently delivered on the biggest stage.
His head coach praised his “ability to perform under pressure” and “relentless work ethic,” noting that he “inspired his teammates and set a standard of excellence for our program.” Those qualities defined a player whose impact extended beyond statistics and championships. He was also named MVP of the Kankakee High School Basketball Tournament in Illinois during his junior year, further demonstrating his ability to shine against elite competition.
On the baseball field, Lauwers was equally dominant. He led Dimond to a state championship and helped capture an American Legion state title. In 2009, he earned Alaska Player of the Year honors in baseball—completing the rare achievement of being named State Player of the Year in both basketball and baseball in the same year.
One longtime Anchorage coach described competing against Lauwers as “a nightmare,” explaining that he “pitched with guile, fielded flawlessly, and hit pretty much everything we threw at him.” That same coach noted that Lauwers was among the rare athletes truly “great at all aspects” of the game. His excellence across both sports cemented his reputation as one of the most versatile competitors of his era.
Following high school, Lauwers earned a basketball scholarship to Adams State before finishing his collegiate career at the University of Alaska Anchorage. A true multi-sport competitor whose teams consistently played on championship weekend,
Colton Lauwers’ legacy is defined by versatility, leadership, and excellence across two sports. His rare accomplishment of earning Player of the Year honors in both basketball and baseball firmly establishes him as a deserving member of the Alaska High School Hall of Fame.
