Tobin Karlberg’s high school basketball career at Grace Christian School was nothing short of exceptional, marked by his impressive skill, leadership, and character both on and off the court. A four-year varsity starter, Tobin helped lead Grace to three consecutive state title game appearances, culminating in a 3A State Championship in 2017. His relentless work ethic and commitment to excellence earned him multiple accolades, including two-time 3A State Player of the Year and the Gatorade State Player of the Year in his senior season.
Over the course of his high school career, Tobin’s achievements were numerous. He scored over 2,100 career points, recorded 321 steals, and dished out 410 assists. His impressive stats also include the most free throws made in a single game (22) and the most steals in a single game (13). He was named to the 1st Team All-State multiple times and was recognized as the Southcentral Conference Player of the Year in 2017.
“Tobin was a floor general who made everyone around him better,” said his coach, Jason Boerger. “His assists reflect his unselfishness and team-first mentality. He valued team success over individual accolades, and that’s what made him stand out.”
Tobin’s leadership extended beyond his individual play. Known for his humility and sportsmanship, he was widely respected by teammates, coaches, opposing players, and referees alike. “What separates Tobin from the pack is his incredible character and his commitment to the community around him,” said Boerger. “He’s an ambassador of basketball and has always been a role model, not only on the court but off it, giving back to the game through coaching and mentorship.”
After high school, Tobin continued to shine at the collegiate level, playing for the University of Alaska Anchorage and later for Point Loma University. His achievements continued, and he now serves as a coach at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, furthering his positive impact on basketball across the state.
Tobin Karlberg’s impact on Alaska basketball is undeniable. His legacy as an athlete, leader, and mentor has made a lasting impression, and his induction into the Alaska High School Hall of Fame honors not only his athletic achievements but his character, his community involvement, and his contributions to the sport.
